Scotland is one of the top ten diving destinations in the world due to the wreckages of the German fleet which were 'scuttled' at Scapa Flow in the Orkney Islands, in 1918.

We may not have the warm waters or the tropical fish of the Southern Hemisphere but we more than make up for it with 2 million year old reefs, shipwrecks, inquisitive wildlife and great dive schools.

Dry suits are usually required for diving in Scotland, but the majority of dive schools hire out the gear as part of a package.

Where to go:

One of the best diving spots in Scotland can be found in the northern islands, particularly Orkney where the German Fleet was scuttled in Scapa Flow in 1918.

Other great spots include Eyemouth in the Scottish Borders on the east coast, where there is a growing dive community and improving facilities for beginners keen to try their hand, and Oban on the west coast of Scotland is another great option.

Training is essential and can be arranged through the Scottish Sub Aqua Club (SSAC), which offers diver training suitable for local conditions. SSAC has a number of branches across the country. Courses range from beginner to instructor level. Some SSAC branches also accept visiting divers with qualifications from other organisations.
