Family Activities

Children Canyoning on ’Van Halen’ near Fort William with Vertical Descents Not so long ago, the idea of a 'family adventure' would have provoked, in many parents, feelings of trepidation, if not outright fear. The idea of their nearest and dearest, high on energy and low on experience roaming the hillside or immersing themselves in Highland rivers would have turned many into quivering wrecks.

Not any more though. With advances in equipment, facilities and expertise and with a wide range of activities for kids and all of the family to try out, there's never been a better time to get into Scotland's Great Outdoors.

If your mind is still not entirely at ease, the Adventure Activities Licensing Scheme (AALS) should help you rest easy. The Adventure Actvities Licensing Authority (AALA), who operate AALS, is an independent watchdog which oversees the safe delivery of outdoor adventure activities for young people. Its remit is to inspect activity centres and operators who provide certain activities to ensure they operate with robust safety systems and within the confines of The Activity Centres (Young Persons' Safety) Act 1995.

There's more about AALA and adventure activities with young people in the Useful Information Section.
